Greta Davies selected for the Adrian Carruthers Award 2018/19

Greta Davies has been selected for the Adrian Carruthers Award from a shortlist of six by the artist Jo Brennan. The other shortlisted artists were: Gabriela Giroletti, Rowland Hill, Solveig Settemsdal, Flurina Sokoll and Karolina Stellaki.

As part of the Acme Graduate Programme, the award offers one final-year MA student from the Slade School of Fine Art a studio for one year, bursary of £7,000, mentoring from invited artists and curators, and the chance to work with a gallery towards a public exhibition or project. The programme aims to intervene at a critical moment to support early-career artists in the transition from art school to professional practice.

Commenting on Greta’s selection, Jo said, "Such brilliant and accomplished work by all six shortlisted artists made it almost impossible to select one. After much consideration, the award went to Greta Davies. The depth of engagement and vibrancy of Greta’s work immediately struck me. Her bold use of coloured vinyl, projection and text to map the spaces we are constantly moving through or perhaps overlook. This felt like an exciting moment in the development of her work and vital time to support her practice to grow in confidence and scale.  Studio time and mentoring, as well as financial assistance, will be invaluable in opening up new ideas and opportunities for her work to thrive in and build the support structure needed to sustain her future career.”

The selection panel comprised of the artist and lecturer Jo Bruton, Lea O’Loughlin (Head of Residencies & Awards, Acme) and Charlie Coffey (Residencies & Awards Manager, Acme).

The Adrian Carruthers Award is a partnership between Acme and the Slade School of Fine Art, funded by Acme and the Adrian Carruthers Memorial Fund.

Since 1972, Acme has provided affordable homes, studio space, residencies and awards to fine artists. By providing the space, time, finance and opportunity we aim to promote the development of art and artists’ careers.
