Acme Studios, supporting art and artists since 1972

Supporting our work

Since 1972 Acme Studios has grown from a self-help artists’ initiative to being the leading professional studio development and management organisation in England. Acme has provided vital support for nearly 5,000 artists, played a pioneering role in establishing East London as a centre for the visual arts thus contributing to London’s status as the world’s cultural capital. Acme also plays a leading research, advisory and advocacy role in the field of affordable space provision for artists.

We are looking to strengthen our direct support of artists through our residency and awards programmes. These schemes enable us to support artists at a critical stage in their development. This can range from assisting graduate artists make their first steps into independent practice, to helping mid-career artists extend their work through having some breathing space to explore their own ideas – often with an involvement in community projects. By contrast, our work/live residences are specifically designed to give creative space to talented artists who would otherwise struggle to afford both a London studio and a home.

By providing a high level of financial and practical support, the overall programme aims to promote production and creative risk-taking by artists.

'The past year has been an invaluable experience in an environment that is pressure-free and adorned with the luxuries of space and isolation. I feel very grateful to Acme and all the supporters of the Adrian Carruthers Award for enabling me to develop my practice in such a positive and supportive environment.'
