Acme Studios, supporting art and artists since 1972

Chadwell Award

Eligibility: MA art graduates. Participating colleges change each year.

Next Programme (2012-13): Application details will be made available nearer the time.

Information

The Chadwell Award was established by Andrew Post and Mary Aylmer, philanthropist art collectors, in memory of Andrew’s mother and aims to provide a bridge between art school and practice as a professional artist. Acme Studios was approached by Andrew and Mary in 2009 and was delighted to support the award.

A recent art MA graduate receives a rent-free studio at Childers Street, SE8 for a year, together with a bursary of £5,000 jointly funded by Acme together with professional mentoring. The award will be offered to students who are about to complete post graduate courses, and will target different institutions from one year to the next. In the first year (2010-2011), the award was offered to students at the Royal College of Art and the Royal Academy Schools. The 2011-12 award was offered to students at Central Saint Martins School of Art and Design and Wimbledon College of Art.

2011-2012: Joss Cole

Joss Cole was selected as this year’s recipient of the Chadwell Award by a panel including Mary Aylmer & Andrew Post (partners of the award) Paul Hedge (Managing Director, Hales Gallery), Julia Lancaster (Residency and Projects Manager, Acme Studios) Debbie Lawson (independent artist).

Joss, who graduated from Wimbledon College of Art, plans to use his time during the award to make a series of large paintings as well as a series of publications, readings and installations.

Previous recipient of the Chadwell Award

2010-2011: Sarah Poots
Selected as the inaugural recipient of the Chadwell Award, Sarah completed her Post-Graduate studies at the Royal Academy Schools and moved into her studio in October 2010. During the award Sarah exhibited alongside other Acme graduate award holders Rose Davey and Amy Gee in ‘The Desirability of Things’ at BEARSPACE in Deptford.

Sarah and Rose Davey (Adrian Carruthers Award holder 2010-2011) exhibited in a joint show at the Acme Project Space in October 2011.

Childers Street Graduate Award Studios

The Chadwell Award is one of four graduate awards permanently located in purpose-designed award studios, located at Acme’s Childers Street studios in Deptford. The adjoining spaces naturally promote peer support, as well as professional input from galleries, such as BEARSPACE, and through mentoring and studio visits. These awards have been carefully developed with Acme’s partners to provide a valuable and effective bridge between college and professional practice. Each award provides a rent-free studio for 12 months plus a stipend of £2,500 - £5,000 per annum.
