NFASP Olympic Report finds artists' studios in East London under threat

The potential threats to artists’ studios caused by the London Olympics in 2012 have long been an issue for artists and studio providers in East London. The National Federation of Artists' Studio Providers (NFASP) responded to this by commissioning David Powell Associates to look at the potential impacts of the London Olympics on studio provision. Artists’ Studio Provision in the Host Boroughs: a review of the potential impacts of London’s Olympic Project is published today and highlights the value and strengths of the sector, but also its innate vulnerability. It also sets out the necessary actions to be taken to ensure that existing provision is secured and that new studios are written into the plans for the future of East and South East London after 2012. 'Cultural Metropolis' makes encouraging reading for studio providers

The Mayor of London has unveiled plans for the future of culture in the capital in the document 'Cultural Metropolis – The Mayor's Priorities for Culture 2009-2012'. Ahead of a full Cultural Strategy to be developed next year, this provisional document contains encouraging statements about the development of visual arts and artists' studios in London. In his personal introduction, Boris Johnson states, ‘we want to foster and encourage London’s artists, designers, curators, producers’ and Director of Culture Policy Munira Mirza explains how London is ‘at the heart of the contemporary visual arts world’. Mirza concludes, ‘London’s arts and cultural sector is a great success story, to the credit of the city’s artists, promoters and institutions. Our role is to help this success grow by giving support; encouraging a climate for innovation, diversity and experimentation’. Addressing the issue of Olympic legacy, the Mayor’s office and the LDA will work together to ‘examine the interests of artists and how their need for studios in this part of London might be integrated into planning for the site.’ The London Cultural Strategy Group, who will advise the Major on the development of the Cultural Strategy, has appointed Whitechapel Director Iwona Blazwick as the chair. With the National Federation of Artists' Studio Providers involved in talks with the Mayor’s office, there is a real opportunity for a positive commitment to the visual arts and the support of permanent, affordable studio space. Jan Hendrickse, Acme artist in residence at Leven Road, presents a ‘sonic sculpture’ as part of Audio Forensics

Jan Hendrickse is taking part in Audio Forensics a new show at IMT in East London which explores how sound can be re-evaluated in the context of an increasingly noisy world. The show presents the final work of the first MA Sound Arts graduates of London College of Communication, and runs from 27-30 November 2008. For this show Jan has created a ‘sonic sculpture’ that uses electric fans to generate air currents and vibrations which are modified by contact and acoustic microphones. Jan is currently artist in residence at Acme’s new Leven Road studios in London, E14.

This autumn sees the birth of a significant new London art space. Calvert 22 opens on 19 September with an exhibition of work by 21 painters, filmmakers and sculptors who take on the 7,000 square feet over two floors, to present Fresh Air Machine. The show is curated by three artists: painters Howard Dyke (current holder of Acme’s Jessica Wilkes Award),Geraldine Swayne and sculptor Iavor Lubomirov.

Acme Studios is delighted to announce the first artist in residence for its new London studios

Jan Hendrickse, a sound artist from London, has been chosen as the first artist in residence at Acme’s new studio development due to open in November 2008. Jan will receive a free studio in Leven Road, London E14 for two years along with a grant of £10,000 a year. Jan intends not only to develop his own practice, but working with local residents and community groups, he plans to explore the acoustic ecology of East London, employing listening as a way of exploring the sonic environment.

This major professional development opportunity is the result of a legacy from the artist Jessica Wilkes who died in November 2005 at the age of 56.
