Acme, supporting artists since 1972

Acme Project Space

The Acme Project Space ran from June 2009 to December 2015. It provided an opportunity for those artists who are part of our Residency & Awards Programme and our International Residencies Programme with a public space within which to develop projects, show new work and engage in a critical dialogue with a wider audience.

Current recipients of the Canada Council for the Arts six month London studio residency, Rhonda Weppler and Trevor Mahovsky will be exhibiting sculpture and photographic work during August at the Acme Project Space.

“This series of photographs document walks we have undertaken, collecting both bought and found objects as a record of that activity. The final pictures, auto-stitched together from many individual shots taken from above, hover somewhere in between conceptual documents and allegorical still life arrangements. The collections result from a capricious set of choices, but they nevertheless testify to what was found along each route, and as such they speak to the indeterminate way the digital image might retain a documentary sense of the world as it is.” Rhonda Weppler and Trevor Mahovsky, May 2013

Rhonda Weppler (born in Winnipeg) and Trevor Mahovsky (born in Calgary) are San Francisco and Toronto-based artists who have worked collaboratively since 2004. Both artists have MFA degrees from the University of British Columbia, where they met in 1996.

Their work has been shown extensively throughout Canada, as well as in the United States, Spain, Japan, Italy, and Germany. Mahovsky has written for catalogues and journals such as Artforum and Canadian Art. Their work is represented in public collections including the usée d’art Contemporain de Montreal and the National Gallery of Canada.
