Camberwell Studio Award
Eligibility: Final year BA Fine Art students at Camberwell College of Arts
Next programme: The Camberwell Studio Award is not able to be offered for 2014-15 but we hope to resume the award next year
In 2010, Acme Studios began discussions with Camberwell College of Arts about ways of continuing to support graduating artists. From the outset, the college recognised the enormous value of this kind of opportunity and committed support for a 12-month award, covering half the cost of a studio and providing a bursary.
The selected artist shares a large self-contained studio with the recipient of the Chelsea Studio Award. Both these awards are designed for BA fine art graduates and it is hoped that sharing will reduce any sense of isolation which may be experienced away from the college environment and ease the transition from art college to establishing a studio practice.
2013-2014: Sandra Lane
Sandra was selected by a panel comprising Julia Lancaster, Residency and Awards Manager, Acme Studios, Gayle Chong Kwan, invited artist and Amanda Jenkins, Associate Dean, Camberwell College of Arts. Sandra’s work uses elements of sculpture, drawing and paint, pressing them to take forms they wouldn’t naturally take and creating objects that teeter on the edge of taking form and collapsing and unravelling. Her work reflects the notion that even static objects are moving in time and space.
Previous recipients of the Camberwell Award
2012-2013: Renee Odjidja
Renee was selected by Tamiko O’Brien, Associate Dean, Camberwell College of Arts and Jonathan Harvey Chief Executive, Acme Studios. At the end of her residency she exhibited at BEARSPACE in Deptford.
2011-12: Josie Cockram
Josie was selected by Julia Lancaster, Residency and Awards Manager, Acme Studios and Tamiko O’Brien, Associate Dean, Camberwell College for the inaugural Camberwell Studio Award. Josie describes her work as looking 'at the relationship between the digital and the material and asks how an image, or a sound, moves on from being merely a representation of its source'.
Childers Street Graduate Award Studios
The Camberwell Studios Award is one of three graduate awards permanently located in purpose-designed award studios, located at Acme’s Childers Street studios in Deptford. The adjoining spaces naturally promote peer support, as well as professional input from galleries, such as BEARSPACE, and through mentoring and studio visits. These awards have been carefully developed with Acme’s partners to provide a valuable and effective bridge between college and professional practice. Each award provides a rent-free studio for 12 months plus a stipend of £2,500 - £5,000 per year.

Between 1996 and 2012 Acme received £3.2m of capital funding from Arts Council England which supported the creation of six permanent affordable studios in London: Copperfield Road, Fire Station, Galleria, Harrow Road, Leven Road and Matchmakers Wharf. This resulted in 186 studios and 12 work/live units in four London boroughs.
